Young People, Sex, Love and the Media: ARC Research Workshop for educators and professionals
The Australian Research Council research project,Young People, Sex, Love and Media has invited NSW young people aged 13-17 to talk about where and how they have learned about sex, love and relationships. Participants have also explained how media, including social media, fits into their understanding of themselves and their relationships to others. The project has also investigated the ways that teachers, sexuality educators, health promotion staff and other professionals understand media, and how they are (or are not) able to access training that helps them understand young people’s contemporary media cultures.
It’s become clear to the project’s Chief Investigators Professor Catharine Lumby, Professor Alan McKee and Associate Professor Kath Albury that there are many educators and others who work with young people who are keen to participate in ongoing conversations around the latest research in this field.
You are cordially invited to attend a research workshop, which will be held at Macquarie University on Friday 10th July 2015.

Policy Development for Educational Trainers.
What forms of policy at all levels – from individual schools to Federal
government – will produce the best sexual health outcomes for young people? Professor Catharine Lumby, a nationally recognized expert on sexual health policy setting, will facilitate a discussion of research-informed policy settings to encourage youth sexual health. This session will be of particular benefit to educational leaders at all levels.
Group Two – Professor Alan McKee
Implications for Young People’s Physical and Mental Health
How can sex education best contribute to young people’s physical and mental health? Professor Alan McKee is a recognised expert in healthy sexual development and he will facilitate a discussion of the best ways for sex education to support young people. This session is appropriate to all stakeholders concerned about young people’s physical and mental health.
Group Three – Associate Professor Kath Albury
Media in the Sex & Relationship Classroom
How can contemporary insights from media and sexuality research be translated into sex education classroom practice? In this workshop targeted at practitioners, facilitated by media and sexuality researcher Associate Professor Kath Albury, participants will develop practical approaches to understanding and using media and technology in sex and relationships classrooms.
